Every day, Americans make decisions about their privacy: what to share and when, how much to expose and to whom. Securing the boundary between one’s private affairs and public identity has become a central task of citizenship.

How did privacy come to loom so large in American life? Sarah Igo tracks this elusive social value across the twentieth century, as individuals questioned how they would, and should, be known by their own society. Sarah Igo, author of The Known Citizen reveals how privacy became the indispensable language for monitoring the ever-shifting line between our personal and social selves. Igo’s sweeping history, from the era of “instantaneous photography” to the age of big data, uncovers the surprising ways that debates over what should be kept out of the public eye have shaped U.S. politics and society. It offers the first wide-angle view of privacy as it has been lived and imagined by modern Americans.

The 2017 documentary 1948: Creation and Catastrophe on the founding of the state of Israel is based on hard-to-access archival records and documents in Israel and hundreds of interviews of Palestinians and Israelis who participated in the events of 1948. The documentary was researched, filmed, and edited by Andy Trimlett, Producer KPBS, (2006-15), Director 1948: Creation and Catastrophe (2008-present)  and Ahlam Muhtaseb, Ph.D., Professor Communication Studies CSUSB,
    Co-Director
    1948: Creation and Catastrophe (2008-present).

1948 tells the story of the establishment of the modern country of Israel as seen through the eyes of the people who lived it. But rather than being a history lesson, this documentary is a primer for the present. It is simply not possible to make sense of what is happening in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict today without an understanding of 1948.  Hear stories from the Israelis and Palestinians who personally lived through events in Haifa, Jaffa, Dayr Yasin, Acre, Jerusalem, Ramla, Lydda and more.
