The fraught nature of US-China relations and today's political climate led the
NCUSCR to use a program model for the CHINA Town Hall this year that
fosters more audience engagement than is usual with a traditional
presentation by an expert. Our goal is to explore the nature of the current
U.S.-China relationship and the impact it is having on each country's
economy, political system, social norms, and future expectations of global power.

Both national and the local panels feature discussants with wide
experience and broad knowledge of the US-China relationship.
Answering your questions is a specific goal of the 4:00 pm panel.

     3:00 – 4:00 pm

The start time is firm. Arrive earlier so you can sign in and find your seat

A Tale of Four Worlds: The Arab Region
      After the Uprisings

Authors Marina and David Ottaway have brought new understanding of the Middle East in their book that summarizes and analyzes the last 100 years of political change and instability in the Arab world. First came the disintegration of the Ottoman Empire following World War I; then, in the 1950s and '60s, the Nasser-inspired wave of Arab nationalism and socialism. The Arab world's third great political cataclysm of the past 100 years has also brought permanent changes, but not as its activists had hoped: the 2011 uprisings. Their consequences have differed greatly from area to area, splintering the Arab region into four different worlds. Join Marina and David Ottaway as they discuss the profound upheavals that have shaken - and continue to transform - Arab and global politics.

The news has been so focused on Syria, Turkey, and Ukraine, that
India’s aggressive annexation of the disputed territory of Kashmir in early August was just a flicker on most people’s consciousness. The years of separatist violence, often fueled by Pakistan, then harshly repressed
by India has largely been ignored in the US.

Victoria Schofield has traveled in and written extensively about South
Asia, especially in reference to the Jammu-Kashmir region. She is
an engaging speaker and, though she lives in Great Britain, is a good
friend of World Affairs Council Inland Southern California. Let us
welcome her by sharing a meal and discussion during
      Thanksgiving week.

Countries With Claims in Jammu and Kashmir

      • Why did India’s leaders act now to ignore their constitution, annex Kashmir, and put it under direct New Delhi control?
      • How do Indian nationalists view this contested region?
      • What is happening in Kashmir now as a result of India’s action?
