World Affairs Council Inland Southern California
invites its members to a 20 minute podcast by one of our noted speakers
on a topic critical for the coming election.

    Ambassador Earl Anthony Wayne
    on
Trade, the Workforce, and the Economy

Manufacturing jobs are declining in  the US.  What is the cause of this?
Is it also happening in other developed countries like Germany, France,
Great Britain, etc.? Is the answer to pull out of our trade agreements?
This episode features an interview with Earl Anthony Wayne,
a WAC Inland Southern California speaker in June of 2018.

Ambassador Wayne discusses the economic impact of trade
agreements, the need for employers to provide worker training, and the importance of North American regional cooperation.
His explanations are clear and compelling.

An accomplished diplomat and executive, Ambassador Wayne has served in a wide variety of positions during his career, including as U.S. Ambassador to Mexico and Argentina, Deputy Ambassador in Afghanistan, Assistant Secretary of State for Economic and Business Affairs, and Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Europe. In this episode, he discusses the impact of trade agreements on the economy, the need for employers to provide training for workers, and the importance of cooperation between the United States, Mexico and Canada.

Considering the unsettled situations in Libya and Algeria, the success or failure of Tunisia's third democratic contest since the 2011 uprising could have a bearing on regional stability. Join in the conversation with Oussama Romdhani and WAC Dallas/Fort Worth President & CEO Jim Falk about why the Tunisian elections matter and how the new Tunisian president can ensure the future stability and economic recovery of Tunisia.

Network revolutions of the past have shaped the present and set the stage for the revolution we are experiencing today. In this fascinating book, former FCC chairman Tom Wheeler puts past revolutions into the perspective of today, when rapid-fire changes in networking are upending the nature of work, personal privacy, education, the media, and nearly every other aspect of modern life. Outlining “What’s Next,” he describes how artificial intelligence, virtual reality, blockchain, and the need for cybersecurity are laying the foundation for a third network revolution.

Foreign policy is typically developed and implemented by political, military, economic allies in collaboration with their diplomats. As the number of authoritarian leaders and populist nationalist regimes grows, such negotiation is increasingly considered weakness. This is happening against the backdrop of urgent global problems caused by and resulting in crises across many countries and regions.  Issues such as climate change, terrorism and extremism, growing economic divisions, etc. know no boundaries.

What diplomatic strategies are needed to address these trends and increase the effectiveness of American problem solving?

Our speaker, Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield, is Senior Counselor at ASG and leads the firm's Africa practice. She is also a Distinguished Resident Fellow in African Affairs at the Institute for the Study of Diplomacy at Georgetown University Walsh School of Foreign Service. She has had a long and distinguished 35-year Foreign Service career, including an ambassadorship in Liberia, postings to five other countries, and tenure in a UN Mission. From 2013-2017, Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield served as U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs. Prior to that appointment, she served as Director General of the Foreign Service and Director of Human Resources, leading the team in charge of the State Department's 70,000 member personnel.

The history and meaning of the Berlin Wall remain controversial, even three decades after its fall. Drawing on an extensive range of archival sources and interviews, this book profiles key memory activists who have fought to commemorate the history of the Berlin Wall and examines their role in the creation of a new German national narrative. With victims, perpetrators and heroes, the Berlin Wall has joined the Holocaust as an essential part of German collective memory and national identity.

Windows on the World: The Rise of Populism in Europe
    Featuring Dr. Steven Wuhs,

and Professor of Political Science at the University of Redlands.

    Tuesday, October 15, 2019
    3:30 – 5:30 p.m.

    UCR Extension Center,
1200 University Ave., Riverside CA 92507

Populist parties have surged in recent years across Europe, challenging democratic systems in countries as diverse as Hungary, France, the UK, and Italy.  What explains the rise of radical right parties at this moment in time, and what are the implications these new political forces have on how democracy is practiced in the region?

We will consider European populism in the context of immigration, welfare politics, the shift toward post-industrial economies, and the rise of social media.  Beyond understanding contemporary European politics, we will consider how similar forces are supporting populist turns in the United States and elsewhere in the Americas.
