China is constantly in the news and political campaigns, yet most of us have conflicting impressions and lack understanding of the Chinese perspective on the world. How did China transform itself from the consequences of such failed policies as the Cultural Revolution and the Great Leap Forward to become one of the world’s economic and political powerhouses in such a short time? Wasserstrom reveals that today's China shares many traits with other industrializing nations, including the 19th c. U.S. He also provides guidance on the ways we can expect China to act in the future in relation to the U.S., Russia, India, and its East Asian neighbors. Sought-after speaker Jeffrey Wasserstrom is Chancellor's Professor of History at the University of California, Irvine, where he also holds a position in the Law School. He is the author or editor of numerous books, including two that he will be signing for this event: The Oxford History of Modern China and Eight Juxtapositions: China Through Imperfect Analogies…. In addition to academic periodicals, he has written commentaries for newspapers such as the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, and the Wall Street Journal, and articles for many magazines, including Foreign Policy, the Atlantic, the Nation, Outlook India, TIME and Newsweek.
