Emmanuel Habimana Keynotes Genocide in Rwanda: Lessons learned and forgotten after 25 years Through many years of struggle after being orphaned at 9-years-old by the genocide in Rwanda, Emmanuel Habimana found solace by pursuing his education and in helping others. General Romeo Dallaire, the Commander of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Rwanda in 1994, supported Emmanuel's efforts with a scholarship to study in the US. Today, Mr. Habimana is an independent filmmaker and activist who has dedicated his life to speaking about human rights and the consequences of mass atrocities. His testimony of surviving genocide in Rwanda is told throughthe film Komora: To Heal, which he co-directed. General Dallaire alsoappears in and supports the film content. Through his work, Mr. Habimana educates communities about the horrors of genocide and how orphans and other survivors have coped with the consequences. He holds a bachelor’s degree from The Los Angeles Film School and is currently working on a film project that examines the concept of forgiveness in the aftermath of mass violence in different countries around the world.
