Populist parties have surged in recent years across Europe, challenging democratic systems in countries as diverse as Hungary, France, the UK, and Italy. What explains the rise of radical right parties at this moment in time, and what are the implications these new political forces have on how democracy is practiced in the region?
We will consider European populism in the context of immigration, welfare politics, the shift toward post-industrial economies, and the rise of social media. Beyond understanding contemporary European politics, we will consider how similar forces are supporting populist turns in the United States and elsewhere in the Americas.
