On Economic Dignity

Wednesday, May 6, 2020
12:00 PM - 1:00 PM PDT
Free program

Gene Sperling was director of the National Economic Council under U.S. Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton. His new book, Economic Dignity, written before the COVID-19 outbreak, Sperling advocates that our economic debate confused ends and means. Should economic success be measured by GNP? Or whether the economy is succeeding based on a sense of purpose, fulfillment, and security of its citizens? Now, more than ever, at a moment when many are questioning the very capacity of modern capitalism to avoid accelerating inequality, a hollowed-out middle class, and structural poverty, Sperling says America needs to step back and reflect on its ultimate goals.
